Dear West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner (WMP&CC)

I am seeking accurate information from 01/01/2017 to the present.

Thank you for your request for information received in this office on 16 February 2020 in which you asked:

  1. vehicle theft numbers by manufacturer month on month
  2. meeting notes related to vehicle crime
  3. the evidence vehicle security/bypass (keyless theft) is to blame for increased car thefts
  4. the number of prosecutions for possession of vehicle security bypass/interference (all technology-related vehicle theft methods) thefts
  5. the developments tackling the security weaknesses that are said to exist in many keyless cars

The Taskforce will work to improve vehicle security standards, introduce tough new procedures for the salvage industry and to restrict the sale of tools, both mechanical and electronic, which can be used to steal vehicles.

The recent figures provided by Mr Jamieson show vehicle thefts in the area had risen 196 per cent in the last three years – especially due to the spike in keyless vehicle crime – and suggests that Fords are most often earmarked as easy targets by thieves.
