Some 20-odd years ago, a constabulary reported that about 30% of all ‘reports’ of vehicle theft were tainted by fraud.
Why would this be any different today?
2024: I read a JDA case study with interest and urge anyone involved in the vehicle theft arena to familiarise themselves with key examination. Some wonder why I still cite parts of the 20+ year-old ‘Operation Igneous’ methodology, others, to include constabularies, encouragingly, ask me to explain it. As evidenced by Jon at JDA Key forensics LTD , on occasions, ‘the key is the key’.
A nice case study – one less vehicle theft (no-crimed?), one less ‘security bypass’ statistic (but who is counting?), one less dent in a manufacturer’s reputation. A similar matter, also involving JDA, is detailed here; ‘fraud, not theft‘.
But sadly, a police crime number has become so devalued that it now holds little significance. It is merely a formality, offering no real sense of justice or resolution. People receive these numbers with no expectation of further action, reducing them to empty, bureaucratic labels that fail to address the seriousness of the crimes they are supposed to represent.
The devious make allegations knowing they will not be challenged, engaging with a constabulary presenting no deterrent against false claims. The process has become an administrative task – recording without reasoning – potentially undermining the integrity of the system. The hard work of dedicated officers is overshadowed as they are perceived to be part of an organisation that is increasingly seen as superficial and ineffective.
Older than Igneous … ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’ (Green Cross Code 1970 … and my Met’ Police training instructor’s words of wisdom). Consider the following:
- ‘Professional’, ‘Organised’ criminals take vehicles without a key, to profit.
- Crashing a vehicle, abandoning it, is unacceptable ‘breakage’ or ‘leakage’.
- Damaging the goods suggests the unprofessional, and disorganised are involved …
