<3 Year Old Car Theft Statistics

A consideration and comparison of CARS, no more than 3 years old, recorded as stolen by the DVLA during 2023 and 2024.

2023

For the 2023 statistics, vehicles 1st registered between 01/01/2021 and 31/12/2023 were considered. In 2023:

  • 65,905 cars were recorded stolen, of which:
  • 7,052 or 10.83%, were less than 3 years old.
  • 3,108 were marked as ‘recovered’ during 2023, and of these recovered cars:
  • 345 or 11.1%, were categorised as salvage, i.e. a total loss.

Of the Toyota CARS, the most commonly recorded model was the Rav4 – 420 of the 837 cars. The DVLA had no model recroded against 54 of the 837 records. Of these 54, the majority had a recroded body type ‘MPV’. The top 3 models recorded stolen were:

420 – Rav 4 – 50.18%
113 – C-HR – 13.5%
90 – HiLux – 10.75%

2024

For the 2024 statistics, vehicles 1st registered between 01/01/2022 and 31/12/2024 were considered. In 2024:

  • 62,972 cars were recorded stolen, of which:
  • 7,518 or 11.94%, were less than 3 years old.
  • 3,485 were marked as ‘recovered’ during 2024, and of these recovered cars:
  • 267 or 7.66%, were categorised as salvage, i.e. a total loss.
