In the United Kingdom, as in most countries, vehicles are legally required to display registration marks (number plates). The legislation relating to the use falls mainly to the:
- Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994
- Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001
- Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001
- Road Safety Act 2006
- Road Safety Act 2006 (Commencement No. 3) Order 2008
The system serves multiple important purposes. While registration marks might seem like a simple bureaucratic requirement, they play a crucial role in law enforcement, public safety, taxation, and crime prevention. Without them, chaos would ensue, making roads unsafe and creating major enforcement challenges.
Abolishing vehicle registration marks is not a feasible option – their benefits far outweigh any inconvenience they may pose
So why does it appear little attention is paid to these marks such that number plate ‘fraud’ has increased?
